Oatmeal & Vitamin E

Category: Recipes
Posted: 2009-03-11 11:12

An oatmeal mask supplies more vitamin E than any other facial!

Oatmeal makes a good moisturizing pack. Oatmeal is very close to the earth because it is made from one of our basic food ingredients-oats. Besides being a staple food, oatmeal has marvelous properties as a facial beauty treatment. It is rich in vitamin E and reputed to have anti-aging properties.

The main purpose of these masks is to moisturize and nourish the skin. Almost the direct opposite of cleansing masks, these masks never dry completely on the skin. They are rich, soft and creamy and are meant to saturate your skin with moisture. These masks can safely be used twice a week and are particularly useful for mature, dry or mature skin. They give a refreshing and luxurious feeling.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and YOU!

Category: Skin Deep
Posted: 2009-03-02 21:17

A decade or two ago Sodium Lauryl Sulfate dangers were in the news and discussed in print media. Today, we don't hear much about it.

So, are we safe? NO!

"Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is routinely used in clinical studies deliberately to irritate the skin so that the effects of other substances can be tested." (Study cited by the Wall St Journal, 1st November 1998)

SLS is used to create more foam when you wash. I highlighted some basic dangers in an article and included a link there for more details. Yes, sodium lauryl sulphate is still in just about every hair care product, and in some dental-care and body-care products! Natural products aren't making better choices either, unfortunately.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is such a caustic cleanser that it actually corrodes the hair follicle and impairs the ability to grow hair.

Many people have scalp and hair problems today. However, these are so well hidden since we can goop-up our hair with polymers to add shine etc. Do those who are squishing or spraying polymers onto their hair even have a clue what a polymer is?

Really READ the advertising! Most state such things as "improves the appearance of..." or "your hair will look healthier". Nowhere does it tell you it will IMPROVE your hair or that your hair and scalp will be healthier.

There are alternatives, you just need to look!

Ethoxylation: Ethoxylation is the process that makes degreasing agents such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) less abrasive and gives them enhanced foaming properties. When SLS is ethoxylated, it forms Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), a compound used in many shampoos, toothpastes, bath gels, bubble baths, and industrial degreasants. The problem is, the extremely harmful compound 1,4-dioxane can be created during the ethoxylation process, contaminating the product. 1,4-dioxane was one of the principal components of the chemical defoliant Agent Orange, used to great effect by the Americans during the Vietnam War to strip off the jungle canopy to reveal their enemy. 1,4-dioxane is a hormonal disrupter believed to be the chief agent implicated in the host of cancers suffered by Vietnam military personnel after the war. It is also an oestrogen mimic thought to increase the chances of breast cancer and endometrial cancer, stress related illnesses and lower sperm counts.
Dr Samuel Epstein (Author and research Scientist) reports: "The best way to protect yourself is to recognise ingredients most likely to be contaminated with the1,4-dioxane. These include ingredients with the prefix word, or syllable PEG, Polyethylene, Polyethylene Glycol, Polyoxyethylene, eth (as in sodium laureth sulphate) or oxynol."
