Inflammation & Pain

Stop for a moment.
Reflect.
Can you recall what it feels like to stand barefoot on warm, soft grass or sand?

Most of us feel good when we’re in barefoot contact with the earth. Why is that?

When you make direct contact with the earth, you become electrically grounded. A layer of free electrons covers the earth and when you walk barefoot on the grass or the beach, it gives you a peaceful feeling and a sense of being grounded. Even if you are doing something else and not specifically paying attention to it, the effect on your body is the same = our bodies become charged with free electrons when we’re in direct contact with the earth.

So what does this have to do with inflammation?

Here is a bit of science: the free electrons, which have a negative charge, neutralize free radicals, which are positively charged. A free radical is a charged molecule that is missing an electron. Because we loose touch with the earth in our modern lives, these free radicals continuously build up in our bodies.

Inflammation, oxidative stress, and free radical damage all involve the same thing: free radicals! These positively charged particles cause damage by stripping electrons from healthy tissue. When we are in barefoot contact with the earth, billions of free electrons enter our bodies every second = free radicals are neutralized and so is inflammation. The earth’s infinite supply of free electrons is probably the most powerful antioxidants source in existence!

Since inflammation is directly related to to pain and illness, it is good medicine to take a barefoot walk as often as you can and bring healing from the OutsideIN!

Candida Albicans Help

Decades ago I suffered from a severe imbalance of candida albicans. I lived with food cravings and mood swings, phantom aches, and too often a sore throat. In the 1980's, no one had heard about candida albicans and the book The Yeast Connection was finally out in print.

I was fortunate to find a nutrutionist who was begining to study candida albicans with a professor at McGill University in Montreal (Canada). I became part of their early trials as they evaluated their hypotheses.

Food played a major part in getting healthy. Six months of a very strict elimination diet was not easy but my efforts paid off.

Today I found a website that excellently describes the food side and other considerations.

It is my delight to share it with you!

Anti-fungal treatment for candida albicans

The secret to perfect summer legs

There certainly has been much buzz in recent years regarding healthy alternatives for body care. You have found a lot on the subject here as well.

Some of the details and data can be confusing and, ultimately, mean nothing to the average person. You know I am the biggest fan of organic castor oil, now there is one more reason for you to love it too! A therapeutic grade of organic castor oil has a nice dose of linoleic acid! Want to know the upside?

I've scooped you a simple explanation, without any techno-babble, so you can be on your way to having perfect summer legs, from the OutsideIN!

If you just want your gator-dry legs to be soft and silky-smooth then look no farther than your kitchen!

The answer lies in that bottle of safflower oil sitting on the shelf. This polyunsaturated oil, beloved by cardiologists for being good for your heart, is just as good for your skin, but from the outside in.

This oil is in fact a super moisturizer. "That's because it's very high in linoleic acid, a fatty acid that skin normally makes to keep its moisture level up and barrier function intact," says New York City dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD, RealAge's skin expert. Since our body's linoleic acid production gets sluggish as we age, it helps to replace it from the outside.

"In theory, you could use olive oil too, which is also high in linoleic acid, but you'd smell like a salad!"

Here's a tip: just pour some safflower oil into a pretty little squeeze bottle and add it to your toiletries. No one will guess you pinched it from your kitchen cabinet.

Lifestyle from Yahoo
Posted Apr.30, 2010

Ovarian Cysts and Castor Oil

This seems to be a growing subject among women. I am asked about cysts all too often. So, lets' look at some effective yet simple solutions.

It is a known and much used protocol to use Castor Oil Packs to dissolve cysts in the body. Actually, it is also an excellent choice for recovering from a ruptured ovarian cyst.

Castor oil is the unsaturated fatty acid that has been used to dissolve ovarian cysts, and others, for a very long time, however, do not use a castor oil pack during pregnancy or menstruation. There have been several important scientific papers written about ricinoleic acid, the active ingredient in castor oil, and we continue to identify therapeutic applications using it.

The important point to note, when using castor oil packs on the torso, is to apply it for 1 1/2 - 2 hrs, 3 to 4 days in a row, and leave an equal number of days (3 or 4) of pause or no treatment before repeating the use of the castor oil pack. This pause is critical for your body to react to the castor oil and allow its effect on your lymph system to take place (proper movement and draining of lymph fluids).

So, we have a simple solution that really works on many levels to bring us to better health - from the OutsideIN!

"The skin is the largest organ in the body, and you need to moisturize it in the winter", advises Neera Agarwal-Antal, MD, dermatologist, Hudson Dermatology (Ohio).

Look for a nourishing moisturizer that do not contain:

- glycerin: only serves to make an impenetrable barrier on your skin
- synthetic scents: can irritate the skin and are usually alcohol
based which further dry out your skin

A glycerine based cream can prevent any nourishing elements in the cream from penetrating into your skin.

Cold pressed, pure, therapeutic grade Castor oil is the most hydrating of all plant oils. Palm'Hydra creams are rich in castor oil and create a protective layer on the skin by naturally improving the texture and health of the skin. It also has a natural ability to calm the inflammation and redness that can present from exposure to the cold weather.

Your lips have skin but there are no oil glands there, leaving them susceptible to dryness and chapping. The American Academy of Dermatology suggest you:

- don't lick your lips - this dries them out even more
- cover them up: with a protective balm and a scarf

Consider having a humidifier running during the months you are heating inside your home and continue to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water during the day.

Castor oil helps your lips too! Palma Lips blend 30% castor oil with wonderful shea butter, and unprocessed pure beeswax - no petrochemicals (parafin) or preservatives. I keep one in my purse, at my desk, in my car, and in my coat pocket!

Make Your Own Water!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you can!
Well, you can make your own clean and healthy water.

Bottled water has proven in labs to be no better than tap water and in many cases worse. Add to that the consequences of the plastic being used.

Chlorine is not the only thing that lands in our drinking water. Bacteria and viruses can survive the "decontamination" process used by city facilities. A number of cities also add fluoride which is not something you should be ingesting.

Many filtering systems will not just remove the above elements but will leave the water stripped of its mineral content.

In February 2009 I happened upon what, for me, was an exciting discovery!

SANTEVIA!

This simple water filtering system re-mineralizes the water, leaves it with an alkaline PH (what we want in our diet), and provides pure and healthy water to drink and cook with. My house has 6 bodies and we are all big water drinkers and we all cook. So, the little pitcher on the counter that always seems to be empty is a thing of the past. Now we have litres of water ready for whatever life presents ... be it a glass or a pot of soup!

Another very cool detail is the five-stage filter we replace only every 6 months (fewer people drinking it will likely last a bit longer) and the 1st stage ceramic filter is only changed every 2 years! I love it!!

Great water, good health, low maintenance ... abundance from the OutsideINto you!

The excitement is growing.
Rhassoul Home Spa!

I have never been to a spa. Yet, the very word brings a certain serenity to my soul. Ahhhhhhhh.

A spa-like treatment can be achieved in the privacy of your own home. The most essential element is a working lock on your bathroom door!

We all have busy schedules with either work, family, community, or all of the above. The best thing you can do for your own health is to fix an appointment on the kitchen calender or your PDA with "yourself". You can even create a code word for the date and promise yourself that (outside of a real emergency) the date is written in stone!

This is not easy to do. I have had the idea for quite a while now and only managed to have my "spa moment" once - grin.

Your Home-Spa can be as simple, zen, or zippy as best meets your needs. Choice of music or silence, candles or sunshine, - you get to decide!

The origins of the Spa are public bath-houses. These are still found in many countries today. So, we know that part of a Home Spa is the notion of body and skin care. Today we associate the word with pampering, luxury, and a growing tendency towards health for both body and mind.

The health for body and mind connection is a special balance that we don't pamper enough. For a healthy Home Spa consider including pure and nourishing products. Bring into your Home Spa sanctuary a tall glass of quality water or herbal tea such as verbena or chamomile.

For body care there is nothing better on this planet than 100% pure rhassoul. This is a gift from deep within the earth. A natural, volcanic clay that uniquely replaces soap and shampoo. PH neutral, rich in skin-valuable minerals, this gentle cleanser nourishes your skin and detoxifies.

Rhassoul absorbs particles of oil, impurities, the dead cells, and dust that can accumulate and create a dull-look to our skin. Sprinkling Rhassoul into a bowl of warm water will provide a melted chocolate-like fluid pastemud[i] that you can apply to your entire body and face. It will tone and soften your skin and pores while infusing it with nourishing anti-aging minerals.

Your skin will be silky soft and have a healthy glow to it.
Nourishing your clean skin with a castor oil based hydrating cream will be the icing on the cake.

Whether you book yourself a Home Spa date once a month or once every 6 months, take time in the busy-ness of life to nourish your body-mind connection. It is the best gift you can give yourself, from the OutsideIN!

This means that eating quinoa is beneficial to those suffering from high blood pressure, anyone with cardivascular (heart) problems and postmenopausal women.

Lysine also helps in the production of collagen, the protein needed for strong bones and cartilage.

Quinoa also has high levels of calcium, again beneficial to our bones, nails and teeth.

Also, quinoa is a high-fibre source of phosphorus, iron, magnesium, vitamin E and several B vitamins.

Easy to digest, quinoa truly is a superfood!

Adrenal Glands - Crisis of the 21st Cent

There has been a noted dip in new articles in recent months. And, there was a noted dip in my health in recent months.

This time the research was personal. I was unprepared and un-informed about my adrenal glands. Having never really considered them before, it seemed logical that these would be pea-sized glands in the neck, perhaps below and slightly behind the earlobe.

Nothing could be further from reality! The adrenal glands come by twos. We each have a pair and they are located near the base of your ribcage, in your back. One straddles the top of each kidney and are made of two layers. The outer layer is called the cortex and it really is master of your universe! Even the cerebral cortex in your brain is under the authority of your adrenal gland.

There is a vicious circle that resulted in my left adrenal gland shutting down ... like a "cold re-boot" when you turn off and on your computer! When under internal stress, strife, concern, worry, anxiety, fear, etc. our adrenal glands pump out cortisol.
This cortisol is produced when we are in a beta-brain wave state, the state we pop into when a big bear chases us through the woods. Get the picture?!! Many of us live in that state and are not really clued in to the fact - neither was I. Somehow, I learned at a very young age how to turn off the warning signs that I was living with internal stress = constantly being chased by that bear!

Now, add to that cortisol/brain wave cocktail some external stress= child home sick, forgot to get my phone bill paid yesterday, sister's birthday card not mailed, etc.

The final ingredient to this cocktail is adrenaline! Things like extra errands this week, late night helping with child's research paper, catching up on laundry, or anything that pushes your day into the late evening hours.

Our cocktail is now ready to be served! But wait The adrenal glands have pumped out all the cortisol and adrenaline they can muster and need to "eat" to replenish themselves. Hmmmm, interesting that stress burns up magnesium and that this is one of the key nutrients the adrenal glands must have!

Yes, I starved my adrenals while pushing them into overload production capacity. So, one shut down. Like a car out of gas.

Guess what? Adrenal burnout is considered the Silent Epidemic of the 21st Century.

I will keep you up to date with how I got back on my feet and how you can protect your adrenal gland health!

Ten Steps for a Healthier, Happier Life

It has been a while since I've updated OutsideIN Life ... more on that to come.

For today I am sharing with you these ten stpes for a healthier, happier life!

True health is a journey that you can choose to go on or not. If you want to join this lifestyle quest here are some steps to help you on your way:

Step 1

Learn to Cook. The more you eat healthy home made meals the better.

Step 2

Eat back to basic foods - if you can't pronounce something on a label you probably shouldn't be eating it.

Step 3

Aim for 5 servings of fruits and 5 servings of vegetables each day.

Step 4

Walk at least 30 minutes everyday. It can't be a saunter, you have to walk briskly. Can't get up to brisk? Start off slowly and work your way up to brisk. Check with your doctor before starting any new exercise regime.

Step 5

Practice some type of stress reduction. Meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, deep breathing or going for a walk all are great choices.

Step 6

Socialize. People who have active social lives are in fact happier than their peers who don't socialize. Find a happy medium between work, family life and socializing is key.

Step 7

Practice an act of kindness everyday. It can be as little as offering your seat on the bus to as large as volunteering at an old age home or shelter.

Step 8

Practice gratitude. When we dwell on the things we're grateful for we become more positive people.

Step 9

Eat a small piece of dark chocolate every day. Research suggests that it may help reduce your chances of developing heart disease. We need a tiny treat every day. Emphasis on tiny.

Step 10

Get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Your brain and body need to reboot every night. Getting enough shut eye will help your body fight stress and keep your immune system working on optimum.

Full Article

Is Your Cooking Killing You?

INFORMATION FOR YOU:
CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHN HOPKINS HOSPITAL , U. S. -

1. No plastic containers in micro.
2. No water bottles in freezer.
3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Johns Hopkins has sent this information out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer.

Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.

He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as CorningWare, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use glass etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap (microscopically) and drip into the food. Cover food loosely with a paper towel instead.

The best choice, take out a pot or pan and cook dinner from real living food!

Lice be Gone - Safe, Effective, Natural

Identifying Lice

Well, it was not a pleasant end to the school year when my 12 year old informed me that her 9 year old sister might have brought lice home. I have lived 45 years without this experience and I was not impressed to have this in my house. I looked with caution, not knowing what exactly to look for, and concluded it had been a false alarm.

NOT!
Ten days later the girls were in full-force de-lousing at their father's house. At the end of those two weeks and back with me, we treated everyone (2 adults + 4 kids) to ensure this would be over and fast! My 12 year old had spent hours on-line learning about these creatures as she had a summer camp to go to and did not want to miss it because of lice.

The chemical options on the market are very toxic to man and beast. They were not even up for consideration. As in all things, nature holds the secrets for our wellbeing.

Lice are expulsed with lavender essential oil while tea tree essential oil kills them (gasses them actually). When applied with the viscous castor oil, lice cannot cling to the hair and scalp. A fine tooth lice comb can be purchase at the drug store. I found two models and only 1 of which seemed to do the trick - it resembled a miniature afro-pick (plastic handle with long metal comb teeth very close together). The one that did not do any good for us was a small piece of metal with slits cut into it along one edge - perhaps good for extremely short hair.

We found an effective natural treatment that cleared us all in under 1 week: With a towel on your shoulders, apply enough warmed Palm'Hydra Hair & Scalp to ensure scalp is coated but not dripping all over. Massage treatment into scalp and cover head with a shower cap for 30 minutes. Rinse and wash*

Check for signs of lice mornings and evenings. Treatment should be repeated 2 days later. Continue checking for any signs of lice morning and evening for a week. Repeat treatment if you still see signs of lice or if re-infestation occurs. Looks carefully as mild dandruff will result from this experience and last for a few days. It can be innocently mis-identified as signs of lice.

All bedding was laundered in hot water and every morning thereafter (for 7-9 days) pillows with pillow cases were placed in dryer on high heat for 15 minutes. All the stuffed animals filled some large plastic bags for the week as they will die in a few days without a host.

To sooth isolated itching shake a few drops of pure tea tree oil onto localized area and massage into scalp.

Lice and castor oil

*Washing Head: A tea tree oil shampoo can be used, look for it in a healthfood store. Best results are obtained when tea tree essential oil is added to 4oz water prior to adding dry Ghassoul to make a wash-paste.
Natural Options for Herpes Outbreaks

Herpes lesions can burn and itch - a bad combination. Topically they can be soothed by applying organic cold pressed castor oil. The high therapeutic action by this unique botanical oil is becoming more widely known. Lesions can heal up in a matter of days; meanwhile the discomfort will be soothed.

Since we are what we eat, there are some dietary ideas below for your consideration.

Consume foods rich in the amino acid lysine – Studies indicate that herpes viruses extract lysine from the bloodstream, thinking it is arginine, as both have very similar chemical structures. Once inside, the virus attempts to use lysine to make protein VII (an arginine-rich protein that is at the viral core), but the attempt fails. Thus, the virus is unable to replicate. As such, lysine acts like an arginine substitute, which fools the virus and prevents it from replicating and causing outbreaks. Foods that contain high levels of lysine include most vegetables, legumes, fish, turkey and chicken.

Avoid alcohol which weakens the immune system and is a known trigger for herpes outbreaks.

Reduce your intake of refined sugars and aspartame. Well, there is nothing new here. This is a wise recommendation for us all.

Some people report success controlling herpes outbreaks by avoiding the consumption of all animal-based foods. Healthwise, the better choices of these are fish, chicken, turkey, and low-fat plain yogurt. We know that, in general, there are great benefits to eating a plant-based diet.

Do consume cruciferous vegetables daily. These include broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and bok choy. Cruciferous veggies contain an active ingredient known as the indole-3-carbinol, which has been shown to inhibit replication of herpes viruses. Individuals consuming these foods daily experience a decreased frequency of herpes outbreaks.

Lastly, avoid foods rich in arginine. Arginine is required for the herpes virus to replicate and can be found in peanuts, 80% + chocolate, and almonds.,The same holds true for dietary supplements containing arginine (e.g. supplements designed to correct erectile dysfunction).

Breast Health with Castor Oil

A growing number of breast thermography clinics are recommending women use castor oil when performing their monthly breast exam. Its viscous nature allows for a more accurate exam and encourages health in the breast tissue. Women will want to look for a certified cold pressed and hexane*-free quality, preferably l'Originelle or Gold (organic) brand as these alone are of a quality that leaves no sticky/gummy residue on the skin. (see note below)

Applying castor oil on the breasts increases lymphatic circulation, breaks down adhesions, and increase immune cell activity in the tissues.

Castor oil's unique molecule, ricinoleic acid (an omega fatty acid). promotes T11 lymphocyte production and can accelerate the healing of infection and sooth discomfort.

Massaging the breast with castor oil can help excessive body fluid return to the lymphatic system.

Also, breast massage with castor oil is frequently used to increase milk flow in lactating women. It is effective in soothing sore, irritated/inflamed nipples of breastfeeding women; working faster than any commercial salve. No concern for trace amounts of castor oil left on skin when baby is nursing.

Note: a growing number of natural product stores across Canada are carrying this quality of castor oil. For your convenience, I have tracked down the website for l'Originelle and Gold castor oils.

Vitamin F and Your Skin

With vitamins, we have almost an alphabet-full! But vitamin F, hmmmm, that was a new one for me.

Vitamin F is compossed of two essential fatty acids: linoleic acid and alpha-linoleic acid. There are two basic categories of EFA's (essential fatty acids): omega-3 and omega-6. The body is not capable of manufacturing EFAs, however, arachidonic acid can be synthesized in the body from linoleic acid.

Fatty acids are needed for normal growth and behaviour of healthy cell membranes as well as balanced hormone levels and properly working immune system.

EFAs also play an important role in the regulation of cholesterol levels. To our skin, EFAs bring suppleness and, the much sought, youthful appearance. Hair becomes shinier too!
A deficiency of EFA's can contribute to eczema and hair loss.

You can eat EFAs by including these in your diet: flaxseed oil, walnuts, sesame and sunflower seeds, avocados, salmon, tuna, evening primrose oil, and grapeseed oil.

You can let some EFAs soak into your skin by chosing a vegan, natural line of skin care products. This is how I discovered vitamin F!

The Palm'Hydra line of body care blends vitamin rich oils into a nourishing cream that does a body good - from the OutsideIN!

The Algea / Clay Connection

Oh! I have discovered something very interesting! We all know that algea forms in water and, for the most part, we know that mud and clay are found in or underground. So, what do the two have in common?

French green clay is a substance that is used for external cosmetic treatments as well as some internal applications by practitioners of alternative medicine. It was used in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome to treat a variety of skin problems and digestive disorders.

This clay's green color comes from a combination of iron oxides and decomposed plant matter, mostly kelp, seaweed, and other algae!

French green clay is prepared for the commercial market by a process of sun-drying and crushing. After the clay has been mined, it is spread in the sun to remove excess water. It is then ground by large hydraulic crushers and micronized (finely pulverized). The last stage is a final period of sun-drying to remove the last traces of water. French green clay is available in a dry powdered form for a variety of uses as well as in premixed soaps, scrubs, facial powders, and masks for cosmetic purposes.

It is regarded as a useful treatment for stimulating the skin and removing impurities from the epidermis (outermost layer of skin cells). The green clay works by adsorbing impurities from the skin cells, by causing dead cells to slough off, and by stimulating the flow of blood to the epidermis.

Other external uses for French green clay include poultices to treat arthritis, sore muscles, sprains, cuts, bruises, insect bites, stings, and minor burns.

Some practitioners maintain that the plant matter in French green clay has anti-inflammatory as well as antiseptic/antibacterial properties.

I applied the Palm'Hydra Mask two days ago and still see the results! The green clay left my complexion brighter and there is lot of castor oil mixed in so my skin is soft and smooth too! I will be doing this once a week as a facial and detox treatment. Wish I had discovered it sooner!

An oatmeal mask supplies more vitamin E than any other facial!

Oatmeal makes a good moisturizing pack. Oatmeal is very close to the earth because it is made from one of our basic food ingredients-oats. Besides being a staple food, oatmeal has marvelous properties as a facial beauty treatment. It is rich in vitamin E and reputed to have anti-aging properties.

The main purpose of these masks is to moisturize and nourish the skin. Almost the direct opposite of cleansing masks, these masks never dry completely on the skin. They are rich, soft and creamy and are meant to saturate your skin with moisture. These masks can safely be used twice a week and are particularly useful for mature, dry or mature skin. They give a refreshing and luxurious feeling.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and YOU!

A decade or two ago Sodium Lauryl Sulfate dangers were in the news and discussed in print media. Today, we don't hear much about it.

So, are we safe? NO!

"Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is routinely used in clinical studies deliberately to irritate the skin so that the effects of other substances can be tested." (Study cited by the Wall St Journal, 1st November 1998)

SLS is used to create more foam when you wash. I highlighted some basic dangers in an article and included a link there for more details. Yes, sodium lauryl sulphate is still in just about every hair care product, and in some dental-care and body-care products! Natural products aren't making better choices either, unfortunately.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is such a caustic cleanser that it actually corrodes the hair follicle and impairs the ability to grow hair.

Many people have scalp and hair problems today. However, these are so well hidden since we can goop-up our hair with polymers to add shine etc. Do those who are squishing or spraying polymers onto their hair even have a clue what a polymer is?

Really READ the advertising! Most state such things as "improves the appearance of..." or "your hair will look healthier". Nowhere does it tell you it will IMPROVE your hair or that your hair and scalp will be healthier.

There are alternatives, you just need to look!
Make the choice to treat your hair better and improve your health, from the OutsideIN!

- - - - - - - - -

Ethoxylation: Ethoxylation is the process that makes degreasing agents such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) less abrasive and gives them enhanced foaming properties. When SLS is ethoxylated, it forms Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), a compound used in many shampoos, toothpastes, bath gels, bubble baths, and industrial degreasants. The problem is, the extremely harmful compound 1,4-dioxane can be created during the ethoxylation process, contaminating the product. 1,4-dioxane was one of the principal components of the chemical defoliant Agent Orange, used to great effect by the Americans during the Vietnam War to strip off the jungle canopy to reveal their enemy. 1,4-dioxane is a hormonal disrupter believed to be the chief agent implicated in the host of cancers suffered by Vietnam military personnel after the war. It is also an oestrogen mimic thought to increase the chances of breast cancer and endometrial cancer, stress related illnesses and lower sperm counts.
Dr Samuel Epstein (Author and research Scientist) reports: "The best way to protect yourself is to recognise ingredients most likely to be contaminated with the1,4-dioxane. These include ingredients with the prefix word, or syllable PEG, Polyethylene, Polyethylene Glycol, Polyoxyethylene, eth (as in sodium laureth sulphate) or oxynol."

Some muscle cramps and spasms are due to over-use and some due to under-use.

One culprit of leg and foot cramps (oh, so very painful ... speaking from experience) is stress.

Stress reduces our bodies uptake and use of magnesium. Although, frequently a calcium deficiency is the first thing that comes to mind, you will notice that calcium supplements are more often than note bonded with magnesium. Magnesium is needed for the body to properly assimilate the calcium.

Lost yet?!!??

The bottom line, again, is to reduce stress. We can't remove it completely but we can make choices to reduce it here and there.
Toenail Fungus (Onychomycosis)

This is a problem that is, well, not pretty but needs to be addressed!

A fungus grows only when it is fed. In our bodies that can be bacteria food or even sugar! Whether a yeast infection, athlete's foot, or onychomycosis, the body's defenses need to be restored and strengthened. Chose filtered water, lean meats, and lots of veggies in your diet - the more veggies you can eat raw the better!

Signs: thickening of the nail, brownish/yellowish discolouration of the nail, brittle/crumbling nail(s).

For topical treatment: blend one part tea tree oil into four parts Palma Christi l'Originelle castor oil and apply to cover the nail and the surrounding nail-bed once daily.

For best results, after bathing, apply castor oil liberally at bedtime and wrap with a piece of castor oil-soaked white flannel, wrap with a strip of gauze bandage to hold flannel in place, and cover with a white sock. In the morning, wash the area, dry well, and re-apply a thin layer of castor oil.

Apply this topical treatment until area appears to be healed. BUT, do apply castor oil morning and night for a minimum of 6 months to kill all the spores and completely destroy the fungus while the nail regenerates.

Do not wear polish on toenails during this treatment. While wet, the nailpolish chemicals will be absorbed into your body as the castor oil penetrates. After the polish dries it will form a barrier preventing oxygen contact.

Note: If sensitive to tea tree oil, dilute one part oregano oil in four parts castor oil.

Peppermint Essential Oil

PEPPERMINT (Mentha piperita)

A plant of many virtues! I think you will quickly find that peppermint has its place in the lives of us all.

This is one of the oldest and most highly-regarded herbs for soothing digestion. Jean Valnet, M.D., studied peppermint's effect on the liver and respiratory systems. Other scientists have also researched peppermint's role in affecting impaired taste and smell when inhaled. Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati studied peppermint's ability to improve concentration and mental accuracy. Alan Hirsch, M.D., studied peppermint's ability to directly affect the brain's satiety center, which triggers a sense of fullness after meals.

Here many are more uses:

* Rub 4-6 drops in the palm and rub over stomach and around the navel to relieve indigestion, flatulence and diarrhea.
* Add a drop of peppermint oil to herbal tea to aid in digestion and relieve heartburn.
* Massage several drops of peppermint oil on the area of injury to reduce inflammation.
* Rub peppermint oil on joints to relieve arthritis or tendonitis pain.
* Apply immediately to an injured area (bruised shin, hit on the foot or hand) to relieve pain. If there is a cut, apply the peppermint oil around (not on) the open wound.
* Rub several drops of peppermint oil on the bottoms of the feet to reduce fever.
* Apply a drop of peppermint oil topically on unbroken skin to stop itching.
* For poison ivy or poison oak, apply peppermint oil on location neat or dilute with pure cold pressed castor oil.
* Sniff peppermint oil before and during a workout to boost your mood and reduce fatigue.
* Massage several drops of peppermint oil on the abdomen to relieve nausea.
* To relieve a headache, rub a drop of peppermint oil on the temples, forehead, over the sinuses (stay away from the eyes) and on the back of the neck.
* To stop hiccups, apply a drop of peppermint oil on each side of the fifth cervical vertebra (up three notches from the large vertebra at the base of the neck).
* Place two drops of peppermint oil on the tongue and rub under the nose to improve alertness and concentration.
* Diffuse peppermint oil in the room while studying to improve concentration and accuracy. Sniff eppermint oil while taking a test to improve recall.
* Rub 4 drops on chest and stomach to relieve travel sickness.
* Place a drop of peppermint oil on the tongue and sniff into the nose and sinuses to relieve congestion from a cold.
* Add peppermint oil to food as a flavoring and a preservative.
* To deter rats, mice, ants or cockroaches, place two drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball and place along the path or point of entry for these pests.
* Mix one 15 ml. bottle of peppermint oil into a 5-gallon can of paint to dispel the fumes.
* Place a couple of drops of peppermint oil in a cup of hot water and enjoy in place of coffee.
* To kill aphids, add 4-5 drops of peppermint oil to 4-ounces of water and spray the plants.
* Drink a drop of peppermint oil mixed in a glass of cold water to cool off on a hot day.
* Place a drop of peppermint oil on the tongue to stop bad breath.
* Inhale the fragrance of peppermint oil to curb the appetite and lessen the impulse to overeat.
* Remove ticks by applying a drop of peppermint oil on a cotton swab and swabbing the tick. Wait for it to unhedge its head and remove from your pet.
* Mix peppermint oil in a footbath to relieve sore feet. Keep water moving while soaking feet.

Wow! This is is an eye opener! So much health, from the OutsideIN!

Outdoor activity reduces the prevalence of myopia in children

Objective: To assess the relationship of near, midworking distance, and outdoor activities with prevalence of myopia in school-aged children.

Design: Cross-sectional study of 2 age samples from 51 Sydney schools, selected using a random cluster design.

Participants: One thousand seven hundred sixty-five 6-year-olds (year 1) and 2367 12-year-olds (year 7) participated in the Sydney Myopia Study from 2003 to 2005.

Methods: Children had a comprehensive eye examination, including cycloplegic refraction. Parents and children completed detailed questionnaires on activity.

Main Outcome Measures: Myopia prevalence and mean spherical equivalent (SE) in relation to patterns of near, midworking distance, and outdoor activities. Myopia was defined as SE refraction < or = -0.5 diopters (D).

Results: Higher levels of outdoor activity (sport and leisure activities) were associated with more hyperopic refractions and lower myopia prevalence in the 12-year-old students. Students who combined high levels of near work with low levels of outdoor activity had the least hyperopic mean refraction (+0.27 D; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.02-0.52), whereas students who combined low levels of near work with high levels of outdoor activity had the most hyperopic mean refraction (+0.56 D; 95% CI, 0.38-0.75). Significant protective associations with increased outdoor activity were seen for the lowest (P = 0.04) and middle (P = 0.02) tertiles of near-work activity. The lowest odds ratios for myopia, after adjusting for confounders, were found in groups reporting the highest levels of outdoor activity. There were no associations between indoor sport and myopia. No consistent associations between refraction and measures of activity were seen in the 6-year-old sample.

Conclusions: Higher levels of total time spent outdoors, rather than sport per se, were associated with less myopia and a more hyperopic mean refraction, after adjusting for near work, parental myopia, and ethnicity.

Source: Ophthalmology. 2008 Aug;115(8):1279-85.

Let's face it, we are all looking for an answer like: "Eating green peas every day will help me live better...longer .... protect me from...."

The truth is there is no magic cure-all that will absolve us from taking charge of what we eat and how we live - both of which have consequences for our bodies and therefore our health.

Natural sun protection is one area that is particularly in need of attention. The lovely chemical-laden creams that are sold through splashy, colourful magazine ads are not the healthiest of options.

Yes, we can reduce our exposure to the noon-to-3pm sun. We can chose to not sprawl ourselves out in the ritual sun-worshiping prone posture, deluded that the golden gift will have some positive impact....somehow.

We can also eat what our body requires to encourage the maximum strength of natural sun-protection it was designed to provide. We can make choices, including castor oil treatments, that nourish our skin and improve our internal health.

In an article by Dr. G. Douglas Andersen, DC, DACBSP, CCN, there are some internal supplements that are good for us and have proven to improve our body's natural sun protection.

Studies on single antioxidants1,2 have failed to demonstrate a protective effect against the sun. However, when studied in combination doses,3,4,5 vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids can slow the formation of sunburn cells and can increase the time it takes for UV irradiation to cause visible erythema.

Complete Article

Thinking out of the box

One of my favorite movies, especially during this holiday season, is Shop Around the Corner. It stars Margaret Sullavan as Klara Novak and Jimmy Stewart (one of my favorite actors!) as Mr. Kralik. Klara has a love interest from the personal ads whom she corresponds with by letter. Mr. Kralik is all business.

In life, how well do you know the people you work with, even those you live with? My experience and experiences would favour the vote that we often miss seeing and hearing the heart and soul of these people as well as what motivates them, what inspires them, what brings them joy, and what pain/fear are they cradling in their gut.

We do a very good job at defining, in our own terms, these personalities so we can chose how to address them, or not. We do have a knack for slotting people as "this type..." or "that type..." when we, for the most part, do not really take time with that individual to see through their eyes.

The saying we've heard many times ... "do not judge or criticize a person until you've walked a mile in their moccasins" is actually more oft forgotten than applied.

In the movie Shop Around the Corner, Mr. Kralik and Miss Novak certainly are not applying it. They make up their minds regarding each other's true-self and make choices accordingly. I won't be a spoiler and tell you any more because it is truly an excellent movie and I hope you now get a chance to see it!

I will suggest you reflect upon the idea, however. Really take time and the heart to see with different eyes and hear with different ears; the workings of the inside lives of those you live with and perhaps those you work with. There is a world of hurting and lonely people around us, many of whom desperately spend much of their lives struggling to run/hide from it themselves.

No human has mastered perfection and I don't expect one ever will. So, everyone is free game.

And for yourself... dance like no one is watching ... in your heart, soul, and in the daily grind of your mind. It is amazing how it appeases, sometimes for only a moment, the most unwanted aspects we run to avoid. You deserve it!

I wish you and yours much love, health, and abundance during this holiday season and for your hearts and lives to be transformed during the course of this new year, dated 2009.

Diabetic Foot & Castor Oil

Not having any diabetes in my family, I just discovered this last week:

Of the sixteen million Americans with diabetes, 25% will develop foot problems related to the disease. Diabetic foot conditions develop from a combination of causes including poor circulation and neuropathy. Diabetic Neuropathy can cause insensitivity or a loss of ability to feel pain, heat, and cold.

Diabetics suffering from neuropathy can develop minor cuts, scrapes, blisters, or pressure sores that they may not be aware of due to the insensitivity. If these minor injuries are left untreated, complications may result and lead to ulceration and possibly even amputation.

The ideal treatment is direct massage with pure Palma Christi castor oil. The anti-bacterial, natural vitamin E, and anti-inflammatory properties will speed healing and regenerate the skin. Castor oil soothes pain and increases the micro-circulation of the skin - both benefiting this condition. Pure castor oil can be safely applied to open wounds.

For larger lesions:
Apply a liberal amount of castor oil and cover with a piece of white flannel (dampened with castor oil) - to cover the lesion(s)/injury. Wrap with gauze. Cover foot with white cotton sock. Best results can be achieved when done before bedtime and left overnight.

I hope this information brings relief and wellness to many!

If an eyelash going into one’s eye for a few seconds can create discomfort and irritation; it is well imaginable how uncomfortable an eyelid cyst can then be!

The eyes are perhaps one of the most sensitive areas of the human body and even the most minor irritation to it can be distracting. An eyelid cyst may be both painful and awkward.

Fortunately, there is a simple yet completely safe and effective home treatment!

Place a drop of Palma Christi castor oil in the affected eye(s) at bedtime will allow prolonged treatment during the night. Repeat this treatment every night until cyst is gone.

I would go so far as to suggest an organic castor oil but there is no danger (personal reference) in using a high quality cold pressed castor oil. Remeber to read your labels and ask questions. Today, most products have a toll free number on the packaging. Make sure there are no solvents used in the extraction process whenever you are using oils for therapeutic purposes!

Different types of eyelid cysts:

A sty or abscess at the oil gland is one of the most common types of eyelid cysts. The infection causes the eyelid cyst to become red, swollen and tender. A sty usually lasts between 24-72 hours and drain away naturally. An eyelid cyst that persists longer than this period is probably not a sty.

A meibomian cyst or chalazion is a lump on the eyelid that is caused by debris left after an infection.

Sweat gland cysts are common and appear as round, shiny and transparent lumps near the tear ducts.

Keratosis is a combination of keratin and tissue that may be found in various forms.

A white painless swelling on the eyelid may be an inclusion cyst and usually harmless.

Nevus is a flesh colored growth in the
A sty or abscess at the oil gland is one of the most common types of eyelid cysts.
Oils for Hair Conditioning Treatments

A good hairdresser will, if she's honest, tell you that "hot-oil treatments are a thing of the past and new research shows these do not do much at all for the health of your hair" .

That said, those commercial products are mostly glycerin based or made of benign oils with chemicals to "fake a look" of healthier hair.

In the article Hair Oiling Technique you will discover ways to actually improve your hair. Part of the methodology is that by nourishing the scalp it can produce healthier hair to begin with. Also, choosing high quality oils that are known to penetrate and hydrate will bring about the desired results. Where possible, do look for a "certified"* organic oil.

Some of the most popular and very beneficial oils which are being used for beautiful, strong, and healthy hair are:

Palma Christi Castor Oil from India
is a triglyceride of unique fatty acids, cold pressed and known as a strengthening hair oil that acts as a humectant**. It's moisturizing quality makes it well suited to condition thick, damaged, delicate, or curly hair and for overall healthy and shinny hair.

Jojoba Oil
can be used for dry hair as it helps to moisturize your hair properly. It helps to soften your hair and can be used to detangle your hair before shampooing.

Olive Oil
strengthens your hair and nourishes it due to its inherent qualities. Olive oil helps to reduce stress and promotes healthy hair by protecting its elasticity.

Coconut Oil
is one of the oils which helps in the lubrication of the hair. Minerals in unprocessed coconut oil, such as magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron, provide needed nourishment. Helpful for damaged hair and helps to strengthen hair.

Rosemary Herbal Oil
is very useful for dandruff prone scalp. Warm the oil slightly and apply it with the help of your fingers. Rub it well on the scalp and wrap with a hot towel for a few minutes for best results.

Spoil yourself with a real hair-oiling treatment and get healthier and shinier hair, from the OutsideIN!

------------------------------

*It isn't enough, anymore, to see the word "organic" mentioned in reference to a product. Be sure to look for "certified organic" and there must be a recognized certification body associated with that claim, e.g., Ecocert, OCQV, etc.

**[i]Humectant: a substance that absorbs or helps another substance retain moisture.

Vitamin C News!

The mighty orange has been unseated as the powerhouse we have always considered it to be as an easy food source of vitamin C.

These numbers speak for themselves! (mg / 100 g)

orange - whole or juiced 50
strawberries 60
cress 60
cauliflower 60
Papaya 60
brussel sprouts 90
tomato purée 100
green pepper 100
kiwi 100
broccoli 110
parsley 150
guava juice * 200

Yes, an orange may be easy to eat but a little imagination is all you need to add the others to your table. The peppers and parsley can be part of a cold salsa dip, for example (keeping in mind that most raw foods provide more nutrients to our bodies).

Vitamin C increases our body's ability to assimilate iron and converts the iron into a much more soluble form. Vitamin C is important for the health of our eyes, there is 25% more vitamin C in the eye liquid than in blood plasma! It plays an important role in the health of our skin, gums, joints, lungs, and more.

Vitamin C is stolen from our bodies by oral contraceptives, tobacco, aspirin, cortisone, antibiotics, stress, and baking soda.

No nead to boycott the eating of oranges but do add some of the other sources to your diet to keep your immune and other systems healthy!

*This is my favorite! I first tried it this summer and it is delicious!

Facial Exercises Pt. 1

Now that, fed yourself and your family, you're home from your workout at the gym, and have enjoyed a chlorine free shower, you can round out your routine with some facial exercises!!

This is a good habit and the concept is not a new one. And, men, this is for you too!

Below is a collection of some easy-to-do facial exercises. These exercises are for specific areas of the face. Start by practicing in front of a mirror until you have all the movements firmly in mind.
(Note: you may want to lock the door first! grin)

Focus on the movements but try not to force them. Don’t do facial exercises for more than 5-10 minutes a day; more may stretch the skin and that is not the result we are aiming for!

#1 To relax forehead wrinkles
Raise your eyebrows as high as possible and lower them abruptly. Do this eight times.

#2 To relax wrinkles around the eyes
a) Turn your eyes to the right, and then to the left; roll your eyes up and then down.
b) Look in the mirror and blink, 'pursing’ your eyes.

#3 To ease wrinkles caused by weary eyes and to relax eyes
a) Face a wall, standing about six feet away so that you can see the entire wall easily. Without moving your head, move your eyes, beginning at the upper right corner of the wall and looking down to the floor, turning left to the lower left corner and then raising the eyes to the upper left corner. Repeat this ten times, starting with the right corner five times.
b) Look up to the ceiling and suddenly look down, repeating this ten times.
c) Look from the right corner of the wall to the left and back again, repeating this several times.

Keep an eye on OutsideIN Life for more in Facial Exercises Pt. 2!

Fluoride Toxicity

Stories have circulated in and out of conversations for close to 15 years now. For my family, we stopped using fluoridated toothpaste about 17 years ago. My convictions were soon re-enforced when our pediatrician asked me where she could buy fluoride-free toothpaste for her family!

Beyond the consideration that fluoride kills brain cells it tends to be disregarded because of the amounts needed to be dangerous. Fluoride on our teeth is helpful to reduce cavities. However, once consumed it is a poison in our bodies. Young children have a great tendency to not spit after brushing. Let us not forget the mucus membranes in our mouth absorb elements into our bloodstream - thus affecting your health from the OutsideIn. Some tubes contain a warning to call poison control if a young child swallows a pea-size amount of fluoridated toothpaste.

Health officials do not come clean on this subject and with fluoride being added to water and some of our foods there is, now, greater cause for concern.

I hope you take a moment to listen to this Australian news-review on the subject: Google Video

There are many sources of a different type of fluoride that can be good for both our dental health as well as our overall physical health.

I'll be highlighting these soon an an upcoming article.

Other Reports:

Infants and the American Dental Association
FAQ
Article by Michael Schachter M.D., F.A.C.A.M.
Hidden Dangers
Newsweek
